Resiliency in Communities After Stress and Trauma (ReCAST) is a federal, 5-year, $1,000,000 a year initiative funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA).

The purpose of ReCAST is to work with Chicagoans in promoting resilience, support and health in communities faced with trauma and civil unrest through the implementation of Trauma-Informed Practices, Violence Prevention and Community Engagement activities.

The overall goal of ReCAST is for communities, providers and city entities to work together in ways that lead to strong relationships, increased resources, improved health, and sustain reductions in trauma throughout the city of Chicago.

RECAST COMMUNITY-INFORMED PLANS

CENTER FOR LEARNING AND COMMUNITY RESILIENCE:

  • – Employ community ambassadors and partners to teach trauma-informed practices focused on Restorative Justice and Crisis Intervention practices.
  • – Implement training to become a Trauma-Informed city.
  • – Establish ReCAST Learning Institute to offer city-wide workshops in Trauma-Informed Care, Restorative Justice, and Crisis Intervention practices.improved health, and sustain reductions in trauma throughout the city of Chicago.

POLICY DEVELOPMENT:

 

  • – Establish recommendations for the development of trauma-informed city policies.
  • – Expand crisis response manuals for the Chicago Police Department and the Chicago Public School system.
  • – Ensure that all schools will adopt the “Psychological First Aid for Schools” Field Operation Manual to ensure students have the support needed to heal through incidents of trauma.

PROMOTING ACCESS TO SERVICES:

  • – Develop Chicago Connects, a comprehensive resource directory of community services and crisis text line.
  • – Establish and promote Community Ambassadors to serve as civic leaders in connecting the community to resources as well as ensuring accountability of trauma-informed services.
  • – Launch campaigns to create awareness of resources, reduce stigma, and promote equitable services.

COMMITTEE MEMBERS

The ReCAST committee is comprised of community members, service providers, stakeholders and youth. The committee serves as champions of ReCAST’s mission and goals, by helping develop plans, planning events, increase philanthropic support and invite tothers to serve as committee members.
